How to Scan a Document With Your Phone Camera (No Extra App)

 TRY THIS NOW

Quick action: Put a letter on a table. Open Google Drive (Android) or Notes (iPhone) and look for Scan. If you have never tapped it, that is the whole post in one button.

People still download a “fast PDF scanner” with a flashlight icon and 4.9 stars. Then the app wants every photo you have ever taken. Your phone already scans. The file lands in Drive or Files as a PDF you can email without the purple filters and surprise watermarks.

I use this for school forms, a rent receipt, a page from a book I am not allowed to take out of the room. It is not a photocopier. It is good enough for “please send the document.”

On most Android phones

The cleanest path is Google Drive:

  1. Open Google Drive → the + button → Scan.
  2. Hold the phone straight above the paper. Wait for the blue outline. Snap.
  3. Add pages if it is a two-sided form. Crop the messy edges.
  4. Save as PDF. Name it something a human can find in a month water-bill-aug-2026.pdf, not scan009.

Google’s steps: Scan documents with Google Drive

Some Samsungs hide a Scan mode inside the Camera’s More menu, or in Microsoft Lens if you already use Office. Drive is enough.

Microsoft’s version, if your school lives in Teams: Microsoft Lens

On iPhone

You do not need a third app here either.

  • Notes: open a note → camera icon → Scan Documents.
  • Files: the same scan option lives there on newer iOS versions.

Apple’s page: Scan documents in Notes

The edges snap to the paper better in daylight than under a yellow kitchen bulb. If the page looks drunk, take it again. Two seconds. Do not “enhance” it into a different document.

Make it readable for the other person

  • One page, one shot. Do not photograph a whole booklet at an angle and call it a scan.
  • Fingers out of the frame. Obvious, and still in half the files I am sent.
  • For anything with a stamp or signature, check the corners before you send.
  • Colour if there is a red stamp; black-and-white if it is just text and you need a smaller file.

Please do not scan your citizenship like it is a meme

A scan of an ID is a copy of an ID. Send it only through the official portal or a mail address you typed yourself. Do not drop it in a public WhatsApp group “for the admin.” If a site asks for a photo of the card, crop out everything else on the table other cards, your notebook with passwords, the electricity bill with the account number.

When you are done, the PDF in Drive is enough. You do not need the 12 near-duplicate images still sitting in Camera. Delete those so the next “share from gallery” does not send the wrong one.

The apps I would skip

Anything that opens with a firework, a “VIP unlock,” or a request for contacts. Scanning paper does not require your contact list. If the Play Store listing is louder than the paper on your desk, close it.

Helpful reminder: Camera scan is for flat paper. Plastic ID under gloss will flare. Tilt a little or cover a window, then shoot again.
