Quick action: On any browser, open android.com/find or icloud.com/find and sign in. Do this once while the phone is still in your hand, so you are not learning the page in a panic.
Silent is the usual story. You call it from a friend’s phone and the living room just sits there. Or it is in a bag in a tempo and you only notice at home. The phone is probably fine. Your first ten minutes decide whether it rings, locks, or dies quietly.
You need a second screen a laptop, a tablet, a sibling’s phone. Borrow one. Do not wait until you “get home to the computer” if you can open a browser now.
If it is an Android
- Go to Find Hub / Find My Device and use the same Google account that is on the missing phone.
- If you see it on the map, that is enough for “under the bed vs left at work.”
- Tap Play sound. It ignores silent and Do Not Disturb on most phones. It is supposed to be rude. That is the point.
- If the map is a neighbourhood, not a cushion, use Secure device / lock and put a message on the lock screen with a different number, not your missing one.
- Erase is last. After erase, Find usually cannot see it. Only do that if you think someone has it and your photos are already in Google Photos.

Samsung people: the same Google page often works. Samsung also has Find My Mobile if you turned that on earlier.
If it is an iPhone
- iCloud Find My or the Find My app on another Apple device.
- Play Sound first if you are in the same house.
- Lost Mode if it is out in the world lock, message, your contact number.
- Do not rush Erase. Same reason as Android.

If the phone is almost dead
Find only works while there is a whisper of battery and some kind of network Wi-Fi, mobile data, or a leftover connection. A 2 percent phone in a taxi may ping one last time, then go dark.
That last ping is still useful. Note the street. Call the taxi number if you have a ride-app history. Do not keep refreshing every two seconds; you will not will more battery into it.
When you get it back, turn on the setting that shares location before it dies, if your system offers it. On iPhone that is Find My network. On Android, make sure Find My Device was allowed location all the time, not only while using the app otherwise the map goes shy the moment the screen is off.
What not to do
- Do not text the lost phone your ATM PIN “so whoever finds it can call.”
- Do not install a third-party “phone tracker cleaner” from an ad. You needed this set up yesterday, on Google or Apple, not a new APK tonight.
- Do not factory-reset a found phone you bought second-hand and then ask Find to look for your old one. Different accounts.
Do this tonight, while nothing is lost
On the phone in your pocket: confirm you can see it on the Find page from a browser. Play the sound once. Warn whoever is in the room. Then you will trust the button when it matters.
A silent phone is not a gone phone. It is a phone that will not help you unless another screen does.
Helpful reminder: You must already be signed into that Google or Apple account. A brand-new login on a borrowed laptop will not see a phone you never added.
