7 Things to Check Before Installing a New App

TRY THIS NOW  Quick action: Before tapping Install, check the developer, recent reviews, permissions, and subscription terms.

Installing an app takes only a few seconds, but the wrong app can waste money, collect too much information, or create security problems. A quick check before downloading can help you make a safer choice.

Here are seven things to look at.

1. Use an official app store

Download apps from the official store provided for your device whenever possible. Be careful with installation files sent through messages or offered by unknown websites.

2. Confirm the developer

Scammers sometimes copy the name and icon of a popular app. Check the developer’s name, official website, and other published apps. A small spelling difference can be an important warning sign.

3. Read recent reviews

Do not look only at the star rating. Read several recent positive and negative reviews. They may reveal excessive advertisements, subscription problems, bugs, or major changes after an update.

4. Check the number and quality of downloads

A high download count does not guarantee safety, but an unfamiliar app with very few downloads and unrealistic reviews deserves caution. Look for a believable history rather than relying on one number.

5. Review the permissions

Think about whether the requested access makes sense. A map app may need location access, but a basic calculator should not need your contacts or microphone.

6. Understand the price

Check for in-app purchases, free-trial conditions, and recurring subscriptions. Read the cancellation terms before starting a trial, and set a reminder if you do not plan to continue.

7. Look for an alternative

Your phone may already include the feature you need. A website or built-in tool can sometimes do the same job without another account, subscription, or set of permissions.

After installing an app, pay attention to unusual battery drain, pop-ups, or behavior. If something feels wrong, remove the app and review your account security. A minute of checking before installation is worth the effort.
